Michel Foucault's theory of power is a concensual and circulatory affair: All that is necessary for the triumph of orthodoxy is that 'self evident' truths are propogated in such osmotic abundance as to block the inception/passage of any alternative possibilities. People continue to do things that they believe to be "correct" by popular agreement and common practice. Thus conformity is the given that grounds the use and abuse of institutional and collective power in all its forms - making it unthinkable to perform outside the established norm.
